Being Prepared

On our way to Vegas last week we had quite a bit of minivan trouble.

As soon as we dropped the kids off and went down the road about 30 miles our van completely stopped out of nowhere. This had happened to us before, actually while I was in Colorado a few weeks before. I took it into the Honda dealership and they found that a part in the ignition was melting so they replaced it. Well obviously that wasn't the problem or maybe another problem came up with the exact same reactions. The van would just shut off completely. Thank goodness the van would turn back on after waiting a while, so all we had to do was wait for about 5 minutes then it would start back up. Well, our van decided to give us a hard time all the way from Gallup New Mexico to Flag Staff Arizona it shut off on us about 10 times. Lovely, right? Once we hit Flag Staff we knew we had to find a Honda dealership and stay the night there rather than making it to Las Vegas. So that's what we did. The Honda maintenance and repair guys said it was hard to figure out what the problem was since the van was completely fine when they test drove it. So, they ran all kinds of tests and found that a spark plug (or something like it, hey, I'm not a mechanic obviously!) in the alternator was acting funny so we decided to replace the alternator. So we were finally on our way! Oh wait... not! Not even 30 miles down the road from the dealership the piece of junk (that's what we thought at this point) quit working AGAIN! So we traveled off and on (literally) up to Kingman, Arizona. We arrived there at a time when all the auto shops were closed. We knew it was either staying the night there for 3 days since it was a holiday weekend or walking to Las Vegas ourselves. So, what did we decide? We were going to walk if we had to! We had an early dinner, packed up on some water, bought new flashlights and batteries, and were ready to go. It was completely crazy that once we were prepared, we were able to make it to Las Vegas without any problems at all. We FINALLY had made it!

So I took this into account in my life. Why was this happening, especially on our anniversary and after such a sad thing had happened. It was crazy. What could I learn from this? Well, I learned a lot!

First of all, I learned about patience. Not that I don't have patience already with living a military lifestyle and having four children to take care of. I learned extra patience. Second of all, I learned to not give up. We couldn't give up. we kept praying, kept trying to figure out the problem from auto shop to dealership to dealership. We were determined to figure it out and get to the ultimate problem so we could fix it. Third, it's always nice to be prepared because just holding your breath and holding hands and trying to have a good sense of humor does not always comfort you in the time of need and if worst comes to worst you will need that flashlight or that water with you. And last, I learned that we were not the only one's going through this kind of problem. I was able to relate more to people who were broken down on the side of the road.

So, let's take this a step further and deeper. We all have problems and bumps that come up in our life. We can use things to help prepare us for those times and use especially during those times. We can use our faith, scriptures, prayer, friends, family, a strong testimony, continuous knowledge of things both here on Earth and in Heaven, and righteousness. All of those things can help us get through the tough times. Just like a flashlight and water can help us, these are just as important, even more-so.

Today I came across a scripture in the Book of Mormon and would like to share it with you.
Alma 36:3
"for I do know that whosoever shall put their trust in God shall be supported in their trials and their troubles and their afflictions"

Come to find out we were able to tell the next Honda place that once our tank was on half that is when we had problems, so they were able to finally fix the real problem and it worked! Our minivan was able to take us all the way to the four corners to pick up our kids then all the way back to Tucson Arizona! It's nice to have a reliable vehicle once again! And not only that, but my testimony has grown even more from those annoying incidences. I am blessed to have the gospel in my life once again. I am happy to allow God and Jesus Christ into my heart. I will no longer turn my back towards them, I will only go towards them with open heart and mind. I am so happy I have found true peace in my life once again.
